What is IELTS
IELTS or International English Language Testing System is recognized as one of the most trusted and famous tests of English language proficiency globally. With IELTS, one can check his or her language proficiency for learning, employment or immigration to English speaking countries. Intended for learners who want to study, work or migrate to the countries where English is spoken, it is recognised by more than 11000 educational institutions, employers and immigration authorities in countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA.
Types of IELTS
There are two main types of IELTS tests:
IELTS Academic: This version is for those who plan to pursue higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment. It checks the competency of the candidate in terms of the quality of his/ her English and whether it is fit for academic requirements in Universities and other academic institutions.
IELTS General Training: This test is actually intended for those people who are intending to move to English speaking countries for employment or the training purposes. It focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.
Both versions test four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. However, the requirements of the reading and writing sections are different in the two types to reflect the different needs of test-takers.
Test Structure
The IELTS test assesses a candidate’s proficiency in four key language skills, divided into four sections:
Listening: The listening test remains similar for IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. It is approximately thirty minutes long and contains four recordings of native English speakers. Candidates listen to dialogues, speeches and discussions, then they take tests in comprehension where they answer several questions.
Reading: There are some differences between IELTS Academic and General Training in the reading section. In the Academic version, candidates are given texts which are taken from books, journals, magazines fit for university level education. The General Training reading section, on the other hand, has materials that are in use in normal life such as advertisements, brochures and instructions. The section of reading takes only 60 minutes and there are 40 questions.
Writing: The writing section, like reading, also differs for Academic and General Training. For IELTS Academic, the learner has to provide a description of visual data such as figures like graphs, charts, maps, tables and so on in the first part of the test known as Task 1 and write an essay in the second part known as Task 2. While in the General Training test Task 1 entails writing a letter which could be formal, semi formal or informal, and Task 2 is an essay, similar to the Academic test. The writing section is 60 minutes long.
Speaking: The speaking test is a live interaction with the certified Examiner and the test taker and lasts for 11 to 14 minutes. It is divided into three parts: an introduction and interview, an extensive speaking session in which the candidates are allowed to speak on a given subject and a discussion based on the topic presented.
Scoring System
IELTS uses a band score system to evaluate a candidate’s proficiency. These scores range from 0 up to 9, wherein each band corresponds to a different level of English ability. A total score of 9 is given to the expert user and a total score of 1 level is considered for non-user. Many universities and institutions have preset that the least band that is acceptable is 6.5 to 7.5 for academic admission.
The scores are valid up to two years, below which the candidates will need to rewrite the test in case the required institution or organization demands.
Importance of IELTS
IELTS is preferred since it is accurate, organized and widely accepted around the world as a measure of English proficiency. To ensure equal determination of non-native persons’ competency in English the test has been developed in a way that all non-native people from the world can be fairly tested.
For Education: Most of the universities in English speaking countries, plus the scores of IELTS, are needed to decide whether a student is capable of understanding and interacting with academic courses taught in the English language.
For Work: Employers in countries like the UK, Australia, and Canada use IELTS to ensure that potential employees have the necessary communication skills to work in an English-speaking environment.
For Immigration: IELTS is necessary for immigration purposes most especially for countries such as Canada, New Zealand and Australia. This is because better IELTS scores can help an applicant to have higher chances of being issued with a visa or even offered permanent residency status.
